Modern Warfare 4 Launch Day Guide: Editions, Maps, PC Requirements & Your First Night
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (Infinity Ward / Activision) launched worldwide on October 23, 2026. Here is the launch-day cheat sheet a new player actually needs: which edition to buy, what's in the multiplayer map pool, the PC install requirements that trip people up, and a first-night checklist.
Bottom line first: buy Standard ($69.99) unless you specifically want BlackCell and the DMZ perks — Vault Edition ($99.99) can be added later for $30. On PC, sort out TPM 2.0 + Secure Boot before install day: it is a hard requirement and the single most common "the game won't start" complaint. The game went live worldwide slightly ahead of schedule on Oct 23 (Infinity Ward opened servers at ~00:30 UTC).

Which edition: Standard vs Vault
| Standard ($69.99) | Vault Edition ($99.99) |
| Full game (campaign, MP, DMZ) | ✅ | ✅ |
| BlackCell seasonal content | — | ✅ (1 season) |
| Operator pack & weapon collection | — | ✅ |

| Loyalty discount | Returning players may see a 10% loyalty discount |
Honest take: if you're a casual or first-time player, Standard is the right call — you can upgrade to Vault for $30 later if the seasonal content appeals to you. Vault's main appeal is for players planning heavy DMZ time (its benefits there) or collectors who want BlackCell from season one.
PC install requirements — check these BEFORE launch night
- TPM 2.0 + Secure Boot are mandatory. If the game won't start or you get a security error: enable Secure Boot in BIOS/UEFI and confirm TPM under Windows Security → Device Security. Early Steam reviews show this and the COD HQ launcher were the top launch-day complaints.
- 115 GB of SSD storage required (official spec), plus extra space for mandatory day-one updates — you still need to download a sizeable patch even after preload.
- Upscaling supported: NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR Redstone, Intel XeSS 3, Filmic SMAA T2X. Early players note the DLSS Transformer model looks better but adds some noise on weapon/character models; legacy DLSS looks softer but cleaner — pick your trade-off.
- 800+ customization settings on PC and a PC-exclusive Enhanced Vision option; RICOCHET anti-cheat is in effect.
- Multiplayer and DMZ require a continuous internet connection, even for private matches.
- Known open issues on Infinity Ward's public board at launch: matchmaking quality and stability across platforms — expect day-one patches.
All launch multiplayer maps
Infinity Ward's launch notes list 20 maps at launch, across four formats. Shipment (Oct 27) will make it 21.
| Format | Maps |
| Core 6v6 (12) | Cachette, Coal, Lithium, Lotus, Mumbai, Munition, Nautical, Reactor U92, Rooftops, Sentry, Silkworm, Transit 213 |
| Ground War 32v32 (3) | Imjin Farmland, Wolves Stadium, Forest |
| Gunfight 2v2 (4) | Cafe, Library, NYC, Smuggler |
| Kill Block | Modular map that reconfigures every match — supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight at launch; 6v6 layouts later. Outer edges are labeled with grid letters/numbers for callouts. |
Modes: 12+ at launch including TDM, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Search & Destroy, Hardcore variants, plus new modes Inflation, Hijack, Collateral (round-based with a Buy Phase) and Combat Outpost. Infected and a new Possession mode arrive with a Halloween update.
First-night checklist for new players
- Play the mobility course first. MW4 replaces last year's omnimovement: no double-jumps, but refined sliding, reworked mantling and climbable copper pipes. The Proving Grounds course (3 difficulties) teaches it and gives rewards.
- Turn off motion blur and depth of field. The game defaults to cinematic visual settings that hurt multiplayer visibility — disabling both is the single most recommended settings change from early hands-on coverage.
- Hipfire is back. Weapon bloom was removed this year, so close-range hipfire is accurate — don't waste time ADS-ing against sliders around corners.
- Create-a-Class unlocks at Player Level 4. Progression runs to level 55; use default loadouts until then, and try the Gunny bot's preset builds once unlocked.
- Chase one Apex attachment. Every primary and secondary has one — it doesn't use an attachment slot, but only unlocks at that weapon's max level. Early community consensus: SMGs are strong at close-to-mid range after beta tuning.
- Use a headset. Footstep audio matters more than ever given the new Ballistic Authority system linking stance, movement and sound.
DMZ: three tips for beginners
- Treat extraction as the win. DMZ is about deciding which objectives to chase, what to secure, and when to leave. Greed is the #1 way to lose a run's gear.
- Use DMZ to level your multiplayer account. Pre-order players who played DMZ early access carried player/weapon/XP progression into launch — the same works now: DMZ has its own 1–70 track and feeds MP progression.
- Learn the Hajin map slowly. Deploy solo or with a squad, stick to the outer areas early, and only push contested zones once you know extraction routes. Negotiation and betrayal with other squads are part of the mode.
FAQ
Is MW4 on Game Pass at launch?
No. It's a standalone purchase; it joins Game Pass in Holiday 2027. Online multiplayer on Xbox also needs a Game Pass Essential subscription.
Standard or Vault Edition?
Standard ($69.99) for most players. Vault ($99.99) adds BlackCell (1 season), operator pack, weapon collection and DMZ benefits; upgrade later costs $30. Returning players may see a 10% loyalty discount.
Why won't the game start on PC?
TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are enforced. Enable Secure Boot in BIOS, verify TPM in Windows Security, and note the COD HQ launcher itself was the most-complained-about component in early Steam reviews. Storage needs 115 GB on SSD.
How many maps at launch?
20: twelve 6v6 (Cachette, Coal, Lithium, Lotus, Mumbai, Munition, Nautical, Reactor U92, Rooftops, Sentry, Silkworm, Transit 213), three Ground War, four Gunfight, plus modular Kill Block. Shipment arrives Oct 27.
What platforms is it on?
PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Battle.net, Steam, Xbox app / Xbox Play Anywhere) and Nintendo Switch 2. No PS4 or Xbox One.
Is Warzone in MW4?
Not at launch. Warzone connects to Modern Warfare 4 from Season 1. DMZ, the extraction mode set in Hajin, is playable day one.
